Monchique: Introduction Monchique is one of the most attractive areas of the Algarve, and one which offers a complete contrast to the coastal resorts, while still being within a short drive of its touristic amenities.
Here is the place to discover the real Algarve and the friendliness of it's people
On the hillside, taking advantage of the spectacular views and gentler climate, a few disceming people have built their houses. Overlooking lovely terraced gardens, they have found the peace, seclusion and local life of a different Algarve. The tranquil Monchique hills remain unaltered over many centuries, the air is still fresh, and pure clear water still flows from the mountain springs to the taps. Take a walk or a gentle stroll through the woods and enjoy the smell of pines and eucalyptus, among the wild flowers and watch the eagles fly overhead... or join a guided walk. Monchique is ideally situated to explore both coasts of the Algarve In less than 1/2 hour drive, you can reach either
the South coast, which has all the attractions of busier touristic resorts, - the main beaches of Praia da
Rocha, Ferragudo and Alvor and
the famous Penina Golf course to name only a few- or the unspoiled West coast,
with its deserted beaches nesting at the foot of dramatically beautiful wild
cliffs. The main town of Portimao with major shopping facilities is just 25 km.
away (20 min. drive), Faro Airport is 75 km (70 min.), Seville and Lisbon are
both 3 hours drive away. |
