Much of this started off being speculative, starting with Mildred's married name of Clementi, but is now confirmed as accurate.

Born 27th September 1877 and baptised 30th October 1877 at Allahabad Garrison. His father Montagu Clementi was a Captain, Bengal Staff Corps.

1907: marriage certificate shows him living at Mogok.

I, JOHN MERRIS, a Colonel (Retired) in the Indian Army, of Platt Croft, Avenue Road, Fleet, Hants, a natural born British subject, heretofore called and known by the name of John Clementi, hereby give notice that I have renounced and abandoned the name of John Clementi and that I have assumed and intend henceforth on all occasions whatsoever and at all times to sign and use and to be called and known by the name of John Merris, in lieu of and in substitution for my former name of John Clementi; and I also hereby give notice that such change of name is formally declared and evidenced by a deed poll under my hand and seal dated the eighteenth day of October, one thousand nino hundred and thirty-five, duly executed and attested, and that such deed poll was enrolled in the Central Office of the Supreme Court of Judicature on tihe 22nd day of October, one thousand nine hundred and thirty-five.
Dated this 25th day of October, 1935.
