Bucklebury : a Berkshire parish, the home of Bolingbroke 1701-1715

Will proved by Robert Fulham Graham, his brother-in-law.

1849. GABRIEL VALPY.
Gabriel Valpy was instituted to the benefice on November 27, 1849.
He was the third son of the Rev. Richard Valpy, the eminent Headmaster of Reading School, and his mother was Mary, daughter of the Rev. W. Ben. well. The Valpy's were of Huguenot extraction, the name being a corruption of Val-pied. Gabriel Valpy was educated at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge, where he took his M.A. degree. He married Martha, daughter of William Graham of Newbury, but he apparently died without having any offspring.
Before coming to Bucklebury he had been a Curate for many years at Orston, Co. Notts, under Charles John Fynes-Clinton. He remained Vicar here until his death on May i6, 1872, at the age of 84. His wife, Martha, had predeceased him on September 2, 1870, aged 76. There is a memorial stone to both of them in the Churchyard. Thomas Roworth Valpy who was acting as a Curate sometime in 1870-71, was his nephew. An entry made by Valpy in the Parish Register is of interest
'A yew tree was planted in the Churchyard (under the North Wall) by me,
G. Valpy, October 29, 1850. This died and I planted two others-one on each side of the pathway under the North Wall, 1857.'
There are several references to Gabriel Valpy in 'Annals of Our Ancestors:
Records and Recollections of Families of Fynes-Clinton,' 1924; with his portrait.
Those who wish to see the connection of the Valpy family with the neigh. bourhood should look at the tasteful tablet in the restored 'Basdens,' at Stanford Dingley, erected by the late Edward Valpy, M.A.
1872. THOMAS WILLIAM WATTS.
Thomas William Watts became Vicar on August 16, 1872, soon after the death of the previous incumbent.
Watts was the son of George Watts a well-known surgeon at Thatcham, in Berkshire. He was born on October II, 1835, and educated at Ridgeway House School, Bristol, under J. P. Despard. Afterwards he went to Gonville
