Dear Dr Ferran,

I am writing to you in connection with your query about Brig Gen Robert Ian Rawson.
Having searched the Army Staff College archives I can find no record of Gen Rawson being either a student or a member of staff at the Staff College. Although our records regarding staff are incomplete, he was certainly not the Commandant of the College.

However, from the December 1922 Army List I have found the following information about your wife's ancestor:

South African War 1899-1902 - Operations in Natal 1899, incd, actions at Riefontein and Lombards Kop. Defence of Ladysmith.
Operations in the Transvaal March 1902, Orange River Colony and Cape Colony, August 1901 to April 1902. Employed with the Mounted Infantry. Despatches, London Gazette 25 April 1902. Queens South Africa Medal, 4 Clasps, King's South Africa Medal, 2 Clasps.
Sudan, 1905. Operations against the Nyam NyamTribes in the Bahr-el-Ghazal Province. Despatches, London Gazette 18 May, 1906. Egyptian Medal with clasp and Order of The Medjidie, 4th Class.
Sudan 1910. Operations in the Atwot region. Egypt medal with clasp.
War 1914-1918. Despatches , London Gazette 1st Jan 1916, 4th Jan, 1917, 22nd May 1917 and 5th July 1919. Brevet of Lt Colonel and Belgian War Cross.

Robert next married Gladys Blanche Katherine CADOGAN-COWPER, daughter of Francis COWPER and Edith Elisa CADOGAN, on 12 Dec 1928 in St Gabriel's Church, Warwick Square, London, England.² (Gladys Blanche Katherine CADOGAN-COWPER was christened on 10 Aug 1884 in Wootton, Isle Of Wight, Hampshire, England, died on 29 Nov 1953 in Farnham, Surrey S.W., England and was buried in Tilford, Surrey, England.)
