He was born in 1812, and studied under Dr. Cusak in Dublin, became MD of Edinburgh in 1836 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His first public appointment was to Baltimore Dispensary, Co. Kildare. He afterwards removed to Dublin, and became Physician to the Friends Lunatic Asylum, Bloomfield Retreat, Donnybrook. He lived at 33 Harcourt Street. He married Maria Rawson and had six sons four of whom became doctors.

The late Dr Valentine Duke was the eldest son of Dr Alexander Duke of Lucan, Co Dublin. He was born in 1812, and studied under Dr. Cusak in Dublin, became MD of Edinburgh in 1836 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His first public appointment was to Baltimore Dispensary, Co. Kildare. He afterwards removed to Dublin, and became Physician to the Friends Lunatic Asylum, Bloomfield Retreat, Donnybrook. He was the author of An Essay on Cerebral Affections of Children,which obtained the prize of the Provincial Medical and Surgical Association in 1848, and of Physiological Remarks upon the Causes of Consumption. He also contributed various papers to the medical journals. In 1868 Dr Duke's health began to fail, and in consequence he was obliged to retire from practice. He died on January 22nd, at his residence at Black Rock.
Valentine married Maria RAWSON, daughter of Robert RAWSON and Maria MANSERGH.1 (Maria RAWSON was born in 1812 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. and died in 1888.)
