Cecily DE HACCOMBE 1

  • Born: 1310, Haccombe, Devonshire, England
  • Marriage (1): John L'ARCHDEACON (ARCEDEKNE) on 23 Dec 1327
  • Died: After 1364, Haccombe, Devonshire, England

  General Notes:

Cecily must have died after her brother, Sir Stephen de Haccombe, otherwise she would not have inherited the estate of Haccombe. See below.

From Tom Magness; About the church at Haccombe . . .

According to info I picked up while I was there last year . . . The Church was built by Sir Stephen de Haccombe upon his return from the Holy Land in 1233. It consisted of a nave and chancel only, but was enlarged by his grandson, Sir Stephen de Haccombe. It was dedicated by Bishop Grandisson of
Exeter "with its two altars and burial ground" on 19 July 1328.

The estate including the Church evidently passed to his sister Cecily, wife of Sir John Lercedekenes (L'Arcedekne), who carried out her grandfather's wishes by establishing a foundation of priests. The Patent Roll of 8 November 1335 records: "St. Blaise, Haccombe . . . to an Archpriest and five Chaplins . . . celebrating divine service daily . . . for the souls of . . . John and Cicely and their ancestors." Bishop Grandisson either confirmed or re-established the College in 1337. The deed of his foundation is preserved in the Cathedral Library at Exeter.

We know the estate passed from Sir John and Cecily to Sir Warren Lercedekenes (L'Arcedekne), who married Elizabeth, daughter of John Talbot of Richard's Castle. Their daughter Philippa married 2ndly Sir Hugh Courtenay and brought Haccombe to the Courtenays. Joan, daughter of and heir of Sir Hugh and Philippa, married 1stly Sir Nicholas Carew and 2ndly Sir Robert De Vere. She died before 1465 and was buried in the Church at Haccombe.,

Cecily married John L'ARCHDEACON (ARCEDEKNE), son of Thomas L'ARCEDEKNE and Alice (Elizabeth) DE LA ROCHE, on 23 Dec 1327. (John L'ARCHDEACON (ARCEDEKNE) was born in 1306 in Ruan Lanihorne, Co Cornwall, England and died after 13 Feb 1370-1371 in Haccombe, Devonshire, England.)
