Hugh of Cyfeiliog, 5th Earl of Chester (1147 \endash 1181), also written Hugh de Kevilioc, was an Anglo-Norman magnate who was active in England, Wales, Ireland and France during the reign of King Henry II of England.
Born in 1147, he was the son of Ranulf II, 4th Earl of Chester, and his wife Maud, daughter of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester, who was an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England. A later tradition claims he was born in the Cyfeiliog district of Wales
Hugh of Kevelioc, 5th Earl of Chester was born circa 1147 at Kevelioc, Merionethshire, Wales. He was the son of Ranulph de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester and Maud fitz Robert.
He married Bertrade de Montfort, daughter of Simon III de Montfort, Comte d'Evreux and Maud (?), in 1169.
He died on 30 June 1181 at Leek, Staffordshire, England.2,3 He was buried at St. Werburg's, Chester, Cheshire, England.3
He was also known as Hugh le Meschin. He succeeded to the title of 5th Earl of Chester [E., 1071] on 16 December 1153. He succeeded to the title of Vicomte d'Avranches [Normandy] on 16 December 1153. He fought in the Battle of Alnwick on 13 July 1174, where he was taken prisoner by King Henry II. He was deprived of his Earldom, but was then restored in January 1177.
