Thomas GRAHAM

  • Born: Abt 1716
  • Marriage (1): Dorothy FULLER on 18 Oct 1753 in Blewbury, Berkshire, England
  • Died: 2 Jan 1769, Reading, Berkshire, England aged about 53 1

  General Notes:

Occupation: Linen Draper

The ancestry of Thomas Graham through Walter Graham is probably wrong because, as pointed to a correspondant, Thomas' will mentions one brother (singular,) and two or more sisters (plural,) which is at variance with 'Walter's' will in which he refers to one daughter and three sons.

Oral tradition from a branch of the family descending from Joseph Graham gives Thomas' father as William Graham, younger son of Thomas 4th of Balgowan & Anne Drumond, linking the family to William Graham of Kincardine and the Montrose line through the Grahams of Garvock. Unfortunately, there is no evidence of this lineage:

...Walter is NOT the father of Thomas of Reading, (1716/24 - 1769.) You say you base that filial connection upon the name "Thomas" appearing in this Walter's will, (and I have to question your posting that without being able to substantiate it without proper documentary evidence.) As you can see from Thomas' will, he mentions one brother (singular,) and two or more sisters (plural,) which is at variance with 'Walter's' will in which he refers to one daughter and three sons. To put you straight.....
Thomas was born, I believe in 1724, not 1715/16. This is according to the book of his in Great Uncle Tom's possession, ( that I mistakenly remembered as a Family Bible, and for which I beg pardon,) our earlier dialogue was all from memory and without my notes to hand, as I mentioned earlier. This, I know, does not tally with the date of 1715 or 16 that one arrives at from his age as given in the Register of Deaths, but that I believe is incorrect.
Thomas had the following siblings; John - b.1725, Mary - b.1729, and Margaret - b.1730.
They were all children of a William Graham; NOT Walter!
Unfortunately, we no longer possess any proof, (if we ever did,) of this relationship, but have always believed this William to have been born on 27th October,(or 7th March; again I have two dates in my notes,) in the year 1692, (again a more likely date than 'Walter's',) and to be the eighth son of Thomas, 4th Laird of Balgowan, in Perthshire, Scotland. That estate should have passed to Thomas Hedges Graham of Abingdon, the then head of our branch of the family in 1859, when Robert Graham, the 8th Laird died.
(But that, as they say, is another story all together!) Our line is therefore then easily traced and well documented back through the Graham's of Garvock and Montrose to the year 1127.

Noted events in his life were:

1. Occupation: Linen Draper.

Thomas married Dorothy FULLER, daughter of Richard FULLER and Martha THOMAS, on 18 Oct 1753 in Blewbury, Berkshire, England. (Dorothy FULLER was born on 24 Nov 1724 in Blewbury, Berkshire, England 2.)
