While Catherine Bayly died at a tender age, her brother-in-law Richard Uniacke Bayly was quite lucky to live a long life (1806-88). He is remembered with a memorial plaque in the Church of Ireland building. On 15 November 1847, at the height of the Great Famine, Bayly was returning from Nenagh to his home at Ballinaclough when an attempt was made on his life. His assailants, who lay in waiting at Casey's Cross, shot him in the cheek and neck. Following the unsuccessful efforts of local doctors, Michael Head, brother-in-law of Bayly, summoned the services of Surgeon Cusack from Dublin. The ensuing operation at Ballinaclough House was only 'the fourth successful instance on record in medical jurisprudence, when the patient survived the miraculous operation of tying the carotid artery.' He lived for 41 years after the incident.

Richard married Harriett HEAD, daughter of Very Rev. John HEAD ,Dean of Killaloe and Susanna DARBY, on 7 Feb 1837. (Harriett HEAD died in 1888.)
