Emmeline (Emma) DAWNEY 1
General Notes: While in the Holy Lands, Sir Nicholas Dawnay's 'estate, consisting of fifteen large manors in Cornwall, was conveyed into the family of Courtenay, Earls of Devon, by the marriage of Emmeline (or Emma), daughter and heir to Sir John Dawney, of Madfordferry in the county of SomersetshIre to Edward, son and heir apparent of Hugh, the second Earl of Devon, who dying before his father, left issue by her: two sons, Edward, the third Earl of Devon; and Hugh of Haccombe [Devonshire] and Boconnock [Cornwall], Esq. father [grandfather] of Edward Courtenay, whom King Henry VII. for his adherence to the house of Lancaster, advanced to the Earldom of Devonshire October 28th, 1485, first of his reign.' Emmeline married Sir Edward COURTENAY, son of Sir Hugh DE COURTENAY 2nd Earl of Devon and Margaret DE BOHUN, about 1356. (Sir Edward COURTENAY was born about 1329 in Haccombe, Devonshire, England and died after 3 May 1357.) |
