Clan MacNeil is one of the oldest clans in Scotland. The Clan descends from Niall (Neil) of the Nine Hostages, who became High King of Ireland in 379. Niall is the "eponym" or "name man" of Clan MacNeil, he is reckoned as the first Chief of the Clan.

2 - Niall Noigiallach ('Niall of the Nine Hostages'), son of Eochaidh Muigh-Meadhoin by his British Princess Carinna, High King of Ireland, who was perhaps the Irish General who campaigned against the Roman General Flavius Stilicho, who was father in law of the Emperor Honorius (and during whose reign the Romans withdrew from Britain). He was alive in 400 A.D. and was killed by a thunderbolt in the Alps while waging war against the Roman armies. Although he was a pagan King, more than 300 of his descendants were canonised by the Vatican. He married Ine, dau of Dubtach, son of Moindach, King of Ulster and left issue,
