Gilbert Rawson, Esq., of Donoughmore, d. 1675, m. Katherine, dau. and heir of Philip Bygo, Esq., of Newtown, King's County, d. 1666, by Bridget Herbert, his wife, dau. and, in her issue, sole heir of Sir George Herbert, first Baronet of Durrow.

Sir Thomas Clarges has informed the writer of the Duke of Ormond's kindness & generosity to him in the pending matters relating to Sir Thomas' lands in Ireland. In the time of the greatest difficulties of the writer's action for the king, no man served more usefully, or was more necessary than was Clarges ... Major Rawson, - an old friend of the writer, is also recommended to the Duke of Ormond's kindness in respect of his interest in the 'Bill of Settlement'.
Castle Grantstown (before 1653)
The ruins of this castle are located in County Laois and is to the west of Ballycolla, in a field just southwest of Granststown Lough. It was built by one of the Lords of Upper Ossory but the exact date is unknown. It is known that in 1653 the castle was held by Gilbert Rawson but by 1696 it had been granted by William III to Richard and Edward Fitzpatrick.
Gilbert married Katherine BIGOE, daughter of Philip BIGOE and Bridget HERBERT, about 1644. (Katherine BIGOE was born circa 1626 in Newtown, King's Co, Ireland and died in 1674.)
