International Civil servant
Pierre, whose family is the one related to us, had a fascinating life: born in 1891 in the little town of Anduze, not far from Marsillargues, in the Gard region, he studied in Marseille on a State scholarship to become a primary school teacher and was admitted through hard work and competition to the École Normale Supérieure, one of the most selective and prestigious graduate high schools in Paris. Like all his generation he was caught in the 1^st world war and called to active service as a sublieutenant in an infantry regiment and was seriously wounded. After the war he worked with the League of Nations until its dissolution, then with its successor the United Nations, always dealing with social matters. He moved to Geneva, working for the International Labour Organization. Pierre was a staunch Protestant all his life and in 1932 published a book "L'esprit international dans l'individu, l'Etat, l'Eglise".
Pierre married in 1917 Juliette Vilnat, the young widow of his best friend Armand Kuntz who had been killed during the war (see below for her story) and took care of their son Jean Kuntz. They had 3 children of their own, one son Gerard and two daughters Claude and Jeanine. His son and his Grandson, both Gerard, continued this new family tradition of working for international and governmental organisations. Claude (m. Frederik Laubscher) became a renowned artist in South Africa and Jeanine (m. René Fiechter) settled with her Swiss / American husband in Long Island, NY, USA.

" Les normaliens et la guerre" page 22: En janvier 1916, le lieutenant Marcel Habert, de la Ligue des Patriotes, est subordonné au sous-lieutenant Pierre Bouscharain qui est chef de la section sud-américaine du bureau de recherche de renseignements et d'étude de presse étrangère. La fonction prime alors sur le grade. Ce sont les compétences '96 la maîtrise de la langue et la connaissance de ces pays '96 qui sont déterminantes.

(page 27) Le cas du troisième, Bouscharain, est plus éclairant encore : classé dans le service auxiliaire lors du service, il est repris par la commission spéciale de réforme mise en place à l'École à la mobilisation et, sur l'insistance de Lavisse auprès du directeur de l'Infanterie dans une letre du 26 août (il avait constaté l'absence de son nom dans les nominations au J.O.), finit par être nommé sous-lieutenant alors même que le dépôt de Fontainebleau le juge impropre à commander une section au front. Or, comme l'explique le courrier ministériel, les grades obtenus deviennent pour lui un obstacle à l'échappatoire : < la réglementation actuelle ne permet pas le passage des officiers des corps de troupe dans le cadre des interprètes militaires de complément >.
