1. Solomon RAWSON

Hanorah RYAN/MESKILL

  • Born: Abt 1834, Tipperary, Ireland
  • Marriage (1): Solomon RAWSON on 1 May 1854 in Catholic Church, Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
  • Died: 13 Oct 1891, Avenel, Victoria, Australia aged about 57
  • Buried: 15 Oct 1891, Avenel, Victoria, Australia

  General Notes:

From Valerie Wilson:
On her marriage cert. her parents are John Ryan and Bridget Noonan, on her death cert. they were John Meskill and Bridget Ryan, and it would seem Bridget had married twice. And poor Hanorah didn't know whether she was Meskill or Ryan, as on her children's birth certificates she was either one of the other.
Hanorah came out from Tipperary Ireland in 1853 as Hanorah Meskill and travelled with a group of girls named Ryan? At least she paid for her own passage. She is my next project.
There is a Honora Meskill on the Assisted Immigrant passenger list, who arrived in Victoria aboard the vessel 'Bride' (aged approx. 21) in May, 1853.

Introduction
Three of my great grandmother's siblings were born to Solomon RAWSON and Hanorah RYAN and five children, including my great grandmother Maria Christina were born to Solomon RAWSON and Hanorah MESKILL.
Main Research Question
Did Solomon RAWSON marry twice or are Hanorah RYAN and Hanorah MESKILL the same person?
1. Is there a death certificate for Hanorah RAWSON nee RYAN?
2. Is there a marriage certificate for Hanorah MESKILL and Solomon RAWSON?
3. Did Hanorah's mother Bridget NOONAN marry twice, once to John RYAN and then John MESKILL?
Records and Resources I have used to date
1.Solomon RAWSON arrived in Port Phillip from Dublin in August 1848 A Secondary source that I regard as reliable as information supplied by Solomon RAWSON

2.Solomon joined the Victorian Police Force in 1853 and was stationed at Kilmore Victoria Information from the Victorian Police Centre. I regard the Police Historical Services as a reliable Primary source

3.Hanorah MESKILL arrived in Australia aboard Bride on the 17 May 1853. She was 20 years old. She was contracted to work as a domestic servant for a Mrs. Cummings of Kilmore, Victoria. Information from Victorian Assisted and Unassisted Immigration and I regard this as a reliable primary source.

4.Solomon RAWSON married Hanorah RYAN in Kilmore in May 1854 and her parents were John RYAN and Bridget NOONAN. Because Hanorah's parents names are different on her death certificate it needs to be investigated further. Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

5.Marianne Thomas Bridget Margaret Jane Margaret Maria Maria Christina
6.Charlotte Ellen Alice are the children of Solomon RAWSON. Primary sources as information provided by Solomon RAWSON who I regard as reliable.

7.Thomas Rawson born to Honorah RYAN, died at 18 years in 1876 and the death certificate shows mother as Hanorah MESKILL. I regard this as reliable as Honorah was still alive when he died. Victorian Registry of BDM's

8.Marianne born to Honorah Ryan in 1855 did not marry until she was 44 years; she was a hospital matron and was awarded the Royal Red Cross in the Boer War. On her marriage certificate she states that her mother is Norah MESKILL. I regard Marianne as reliable.

9.Hanorah RAWSON died in Avenel in 1891 and on her death certificate her parents were shown as Bridget RYAN and John MESKILL. Victorian Registry of BDM's. Further research to be done in Ireland.

10.A marriage was found for Bridget NOONAN and John RYAN, both of Emly, Tipperary, IRE. Further research may indicate that this is Bridget's first marriage.

Repositories and Records that I plan to use

1. Northern Tipperary Research Office, Tipperary IRE for help in finding the family of Hanorah RYAN and or Hanorah MESKILL.
2. Emly Parish in the Diocese of Emly and Clonmel applying for a marriage certificate for Bridget NOONAN and John RYAN
3. Emly Parish of Emly and Clonmel for information regarding John RYAN
4. ibid Bridget NOONAN
5. Diocese of Beechworth Victoria for a copy of Marianne RAWSON'S baptismal certificate.
6. Victorian BDM's for death records of Hanorah RAWSON nee RYAN
7. Victorian BDM's for marriage records of Hanorah MESKILL and Solomon RAWSON,

Reflective Statement
Hanorah MESKILL arrived in Victoria in 1853 and was contracted for domestic service to a Mrs. Cummings of Kilmore. A Mr. Donald Cummings owned the Glenlyon Hotel in Kilmore at the time. Solomon Rawson also arrived in Kilmore in 1853 a member of the Victorian Police Force.
Solomon RAWSON and Hanorah RYAN married in 1854 in Kilmore, Hanorah's parents were Bridget NOONAN and John RYAN. Hanorah's death certificate states that she married Solomon Rawson in 1854 at the age of 21 in Kilmore. Her parents were Bridget RYAN and John MESKILL.
Both John RYAN and John MESKILL were tailors
All the birth certificates of the children state that Hanorah and Solomon were married in May 1854 at Kilmore and show names and ages of all prior children born in Avenel to Solomon and Hanorah Rawson.
All of the death certificates excluding one show Hanorah MESKILL as being mother of the children of the marriage. Of the three children born to Honorah RYAN, the eldest child Marianne's marriage certificate states that her mother is Norah MESKILL. The third child born to Hanorah RYAN, Thomas died at the age of 18 and his mother was listed as Hanorah MESKILL on his death certificate.
I started this assignment with the underlying belief that Hanorah RYAN and Hanorah MESKILL are one and the same person and am hoping that the ongoing research will prove this to be so. It is possible that Hanorah's confusion over her surname was caused by being raised in an extended family of MESKILLS, RYANS and NOONANS and also not being able to read or write would be a hindrance.
In summary, although I am not certain I will find a record of Hanorah's birth. I will try to continue my research using the repositories listed.

Added Information
I have found no death certificate for a Hanorah RAWSON (nee RYAN)
I have found no marriage certificate for Solomon RAWSON and Hanorah MESKILL.
I did find a marriage certificate for John RYAN and Bridget NOONAN on the 26th May 1818 in Emly, Tipperary, Ireland.
I also found a baptismal certificate for Marianne RAWSON, first born of the children which shows her sponsors at the christening were Richard and Ann HILET. Further research shows that Ann HILET was formerly Ann ENGLISH born in Emly, Tipperary. Which to me shows a connection to Emly Tipperary for Hanorah.
The diocese of Emly, Tipperary informed me of the marriage between Bridget NOONAN and John RYAN but could find no record of this couple having had any children.
This couple would have been married 16 years about the time of Hanorah's birth
It is possible that Hanorah was raised by this couple as Hanorah Ryan, later in Australia she discovered she was actually Hanorah Meskill.

So many possibilities and will be until more facts are discovered.
But my belief is unchanging that Hanorah Ryan and Hanorah Meskill are one and the same person.
Valerie Wilson
