Ralph SNEYD

  General Notes:

RALPH SNEYDE, 1564-1643, married Felicia Archbold, daughter of Nicholas Archbold of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, and had three sons and six daughters. The third son, Richard, had a daughter who married Edward Wetenhall MD, the son of Edward Wettenhall who went to Ireland and became Bishop of Cork and Ross. Later he moved to the See of Ardagh and Kilmore in Cavan, where he took the place of Dr. Sheridan, forebear to Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The Bishop and his son are buried in Westminster Abbey by Poets Corner, with a memorial on the wall above their graves, (see the summary on Wettenhall).

The eldest son Colonel Ralph Sneyd was a leading Royalist in The Civil War and was close to King Charles I and Prince Rupert. He was shot in 1650, and died without a successor. The family sustained heavy financial losses during The Civil War, which were not recovered until the 18th Century. The second son, William, consequently became heir to a reduced estate. ¹
