Richard SNEYDE

  • Marriage (1): Ann FOWLEHURST

  General Notes:

RICHARD SNEYDE, Recorder of Chester, a Member of Parliament, Kings Attorney in Caernarvon, Merioneth, and Anglesey, and a member of the Council of State for Princess Mary. He was co-executor to his cousin Sir Richard Sutton, who died in 1524. Sir Richard Sutton with Bishop Smyth were the founders of Brasenose College, Oxford. Richard Sneyde married Ann, the daughter of Sir Robert Fowlehurst of Crewe, (later Fulleshurst), they had five children, with an eldest son.

The line traces back to Nicolas de Sned also de Tunstall and his son Richard de Tunstall de Sneyde:

NICHOLAS DE SNED also DE TUNSTALL, from his mothers family name, held grants of land from his kinsman Nicholas, Lord of Aldithley, in both his own right and that of his wife, Idonea, the daughter of Aegidius de Aldithley. Nicholas was succeeded by his son.

RICHARD DE TUNSTALL DE SNEYDE took part in the wars against France as Squire to James, Lord Audley, and fought in the Battle of Poitiers, 1356 in Audley's famed personal assault with his squires on the French. This was once lauded as a noted feat of arms in chivalry, but many military historians now tend to regard it as a foolhardy exploit that had little purpose, which was unrelated to the objectives of King Edward III, and could have lost the battle. But Lord Audley was rewarded and the Sneyd's became entitled to bear the Fleur de Lis in their coat of arms in addition to the plain scythe, black on a silver ground. His son and heir succeeded Richard.

RICHARD SNEYDE of Sneyde, Bradwell, and Tunstall, to whom Lord Audley and others granted the lands of Bradwell in the Parish of Wolstanton, which became the main seat of the family in this period. His son succeeded Richard.

WILLIAM SNEYDE; living in the time of King Henry IV; was succeeded by his son, Richard.

RICHARD SNEYDE, who married Agnes, daughter of John Sutton of Sutton and Bartholemy in Co. Chester. They had a son.

NICHOLAS SNEYDE, who was living in 1473. He married Margaret, the daughter and co-heir of Robert Downes of Shrigley, Co. Chester, and had children including a son.

WILLIAM SNEYDE, also a citizen of the City of Chester, Sheriff in 1473, and Mayor in 1479. He married Joanna, daughter and heir of Roger Ledsham, of Chester, and their children included a son. 1

Richard married Ann FOWLEHURST.
