  General Notes:

SIR WILLIAM SNEYDE, High Sheriff of Staffordshire in three years in the reigns of King Edward VI and Queen Mary I. He fought the Scots, successfully, in the Battle of Pinkie, 1547. He was regarded as a pillar of The Reformation, which led to some temporal benefits. In the 1540's he gained additional grants of the lands of Keele that had been in the possession of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. In addition to his original estates he bought 15,000 acres to add holdings in Audley, Heleigh, Chesterton, Norton-in-the-Moors, Tunstall, Chatterley, Burslem, Sneyd, Talke, Chell, and Redstreet.

William married firstly, Ann, the daughter and heir of Thomas Barrowe of Flookersbrooke, near Chester, by whom he had issue, and secondly, Jane, daughter and heir of John Salter, of Salter's Hall, Shropshire, and widow of Thomas Chetwynd of Ingestre, (see the summary on Chetwynd). The marriages of the daughters had the consequence of giving Sneyd ancestry to a number of great landed families in later generations. William and Ann are buried in a major tomb in the Parish Church of Wolstanton, by Stoke on Trent, and their one surviving son succeeded. 1

William married Ann BARROWE, daughter of Thomas BARROWE of Flookersbrooke, Cheshire, England. and Unknown.
