Annie Nevile WYATT 1
- Born: 1858, Scotland
- Marriage (1): William James GORDON-CANNING in 1884 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England
General Notes:
Census 1861, at the Grove, Compton Lodge, Heston, with Catherine McQueen, head, widow, age 45, her aunt and Mary Jane Wyatt, her Grand mother, widow, age 74: Annie Nevile Wyatt age 3.
Census 1881, age 23, unmarried, living with her parents in Cheltenham.
George Nevile Wyatt had been a churchwarden at St Luke's, Cheltenham, but in 1884 their daughter Annie married the Reverend William Clifford Aston, a son of the Vicar of St Luke's. In 1894 the patronage of the living at Leckhampton was up for sale, and was bought by Mrs Wyatt (by then a widow). When there was a vacancy in 1895 she was thus in a position to arrange the appointment of her son-in-law as the incumbent. This act of nepotism was perhaps forgivable, as Clifford Aston brought energy and good fellowship to the village. He is best remembered for inspiring the building of the Parish Hall as a centre of its social life.16
