Lewis is the son of George Duke Mansergh of Riversdale, County Kildare, Ireland and Mary Studdert Mansergh the second daughter of George Studdert of Kilkishan House, County Clare, Ireland.

On Oct 23 1832, Mary Studdert Mansergh was deeded a tract of land in Quebec by Edward Fitzgerald Studdert. This land was located six miles north of Beebee, Quebec, on the Canadian and United States border. Mary brought her sons, Lewis and George, to America, settled on this property and farmed it with the aid of the two sons.

Lewis married Jan 1 1836 at Stanstead, Vermont (which later became part of Quebec, Canada) to Mary Ann Atkinson. They lived in Quebec for nine years after their marriage. About 1845, they moved with their two children, George and Christopher, from Quebec to Jericho, Vermont, where Emily and Lewis Jr were born.

Lewis moved to Prescott, Wisconsin in 1856 and built the brick house at 618 Pearl Street North. He has served on the city council and county board, he was also a real estate dealer and farmer.
